Professional Wills: Guidance for Trainee and Clinical Members

UPCA would like to remind all Trainee Members, Non Accredited and Accredited Clinical Members of the importance of having a Professional Will, or Professional Executor, in place as part of responsible and ethical practice.

A Professional Will sets out clear instructions for how your practice should be managed in the event of your death, serious illness, or incapacity. This may include arrangements for informing clients, managing confidential records, and ensuring appropriate continuity or closure of care. Having these plans in place helps to safeguard clients, protect confidentiality, and support colleagues or family members who may need to act on your behalf.

Putting a Professional Will in place is an important aspect of professional responsibility and risk management. It reflects good ethical practice and aligns with the expectation that practitioners take appropriate steps to ensure client welfare in all circumstances, including those that are unforeseen.

To support members, UPCA has developed guidance and a Professional Will template, which provides a clear framework for documenting your wishes and identifying a suitable executor. Members are strongly encouraged to review this resource and ensure appropriate arrangements are in place within their practice.
