Research Invitation: Exploring the Experiences of Marginalised Postgraduate Counselling & Psychotherapy Students

UPCA Member Sarah Atterbury is conducting a research study exploring the lived experiences of racially and/or ethnically marginalised students who have withdrawn from postgraduate counselling or psychotherapy programmes in the UK.

The study aims to better understand the emotional, cultural, and systemic factors that contribute to students’ decisions to withdraw from training, and to identify how institutions can improve support for students from diverse backgrounds.

While there is growing research focused on decolonial practice and educator perspectives, there is very limited research capturing the voices of students who leave their training programmes. This study seeks to address that gap by centring the experiences of those students.

What does participation involve?

  • A one-to-one semi-structured interview

  • Conducted online via MS Teams

  • Approximately 30 minutes in duration

Who can take part?

  • Former postgraduate counselling or psychotherapy students in the UK

  • Who identify as racially and/or ethnically marginalised

  • And who withdrew from their training programme
